[Hey look, it's the neighbor girl from 2237 Stevens, headed out the door for to school. She glances over and gives a cheerful wave.]

Hey! First day here? You look pretty confused.

Excuse me, but where is "here"?

Here is Mayfield and we're kind of trapped for the moment.

From:

Mayfield? Trapped?

From:

It's kind of a long story, but the basic idea is we've all been brought here by magic or something, and there's no way out because the town just loops forever. They make people live with each other in families for some reason. Oh, and there's people who think they've lived here forever. They're called drones. You can pretty much just ignore them.

From:

Thank you for the information. I'll keep this in mind, but with what you do know, do you know who is in charge of this whole operation?

From:

A little girl named Lucy Smith, but I wouldn't go looking for her if I were you.

From:

Lucy Smith? I see... is she dangerous then?

From:

Yeah. She's unbelievably strong. She's gotta be either a powerful witch or a demon or something.

Understood. Thank you again.

From:

No problem! I'm right over at 2237 if you ever need anything, okay? My name's Yuna.

From:

Yuna. That's a nice name. Thank you again for your time, and my name is Charlie.

Thanks! I always liked it too. Nice to meet you, Charlie.

[Sarah Jane is in the kitchen making tea. She's rather surprised to find... not that pesky drone coming down the stairs]

Good morning. I imagine you have a lot of questions.

From:

Indeed. We'll start with the obvious... where am I?

From:

The town is called Mayfield. It's a facsimile of 1950s America on Earth.

From:

What do you mean by... "on Earth"? Last I checked, I still was on Earth.

[Sarah Jane smiles]

Just thought I'd make it clear. Not everyone here is from Earth.

E-excuse me?

From:

I'm sorry, that was probably a bit much, wasn't it. The town kidnaps people from a wide variety of places.

From:

... The town?

From:

More specifically, the forces that control it. Essentially, there are three kinds of people here.

First there are the people like you and me, brought here from someplace else.

The second category are what we call drones. They follow a rigid script based on idealized versions of 1950s gender roles. They also insist that the rest of us have been here all our lives and fit into their neat little boxes. There are two drone children that live in this house, so you'll see that for yourself soon enough.

Finally, there is a third category that seem to be the powers in the city. They're a bit more distinct than the drones, and more dangerous. The mayor, the chief of police, the milkman, the librarian and the postman. The Smith family, notably their daughter Lucy, are also in this category.
